Mount Osore, whose name is generally translated with Dread Mountain, is a sacred mountain raising in the middle of the Shimokita peninsula 下北半島, in the northern part of Aomori Prefecture. This isolated location, at the extreme borders of Honshū 本州, contributed to transform Mount Osore in the place of disappearing traditions, an older world enduring and surviving modernity. Moreover, through times, this place became to be known as the “Hell Mountain”, the location par excellence where the dead exist in a parallel dimension, and where it is still possible to directly experiment an encounter with the other world through a variety of ritual practices (consolation, pacification, communication), in particular during the Taisai 大祭 celebration at the end of July.
